Dr. Janice on being Grounded by Purpose, from Overwhelm to Clarity and Boundaries
Janice is a paediatrician I have known for many years. She came to me in tears, overwhelmed with the needs of her patients and the high level of support some of their parents needed. In that moment of overwhelm she said, "It's all too hard, it's too much effort. It doesn't matter how much effort I make, it's not enough. These families have so much difficulty in their lives."
We talked about what was important to her in her work, essentially what gets her out of bed in the morning. Thinking back to why she trained to be a paedia-trician in the first place, she told me about a time during her intern year when a child had died of complications. That had always stayed with her. She went on to tell me how remembering that little boy had helped her work through some of the very difficult family interactions she'd had during her advanced training and since.
By remembering this and other stories, Janice reconnected with her previous value-based decisions to always help the families she worked with feel seen and heard. Her belief that everyone deserves access to great healthcare grounded her. We talked about effort, reframing and exploring where else Janice's energy went. How did she decide what to give her effort to?
Using this new understanding of her purpose, we reviewed what she believed about her own wellbeing and boundaries. She set guidelines for herself and developed a language to enhance her internal response to distressed parents of the children she works with. She decided that she did want to keep giving her effort to her patients and their families.

Dr. Joanne's journey on Stepping Into Her Future as a Consultant, and overcoming “Not Good Enough”

Joanne was working as a registrar in a regional hospital. She liked working in the country; there were lots of opportunities for her to expand her skills that she might not have had in a big city hospital. Her supervisor gave her constructive feedback and she passed her recent physician clinical exams. Jo was excited that the prospect of fellowship was so close now. Still, there was a persistent voice inside her head that was convinced that any day now she would be shown up as not good enough to be a doctor. No matter how hard she worked, how much positive feedback she received, or how successful she seemed, she continued to believe that she wasn't good enough. The thought of being a consultant terrified her more and more the closer she got.
One day she shared her fears with her supervisor, David. He had always been encouraging and she trusted him. He recognised her fear and named it - imposter syndrome. He told Joanne that every doctor he knew had experienced this sometime in their career. He said he experienced it recently when he spoke at a conference. This helped Joanne to name her fear of being a consultant and not being good enough. She reframed these thoughts by saying to herself, "David and I share this thought; it connects us". This helped her feel safe and 'normal' (a sense of belonging). She also said to herself, "This idea keeps me on my toes and helps me be present and concentrate".
