Doctors partner with me as their specialist psychologist coach to help them respond to the professional and personal dilemmas of a medical life. I have invested a decade learning how a psychologist coach can support doctors to be well and perform well for their own benefit and that of their patients. I work best with leading doctors and those who are invested in designing a better healthcare system.
I help doctors, (and sometimes leading nurses and other healthcare leaders too), craft a better life, one that comes from expanded thinking, raised awareness and a willingness to challenge existing assumptions. Coaching with me is high in trust, high in candor and action oriented.
In the candid, safe space of coaching we can restore hope, amplify skills, create more wellbeing and improve performance. As a psychologist I have made understanding people my life's work and bring a depth and breadth of psychological knowledge, honed over three decades, to the coaching process.
I have worked with doctors as their specialist coach since 2014, establishing Australia's first coaching practice dedicated to doctors. Your human skills are what deliver the art of medicine. These intra and interpersonal skills enable your optimal practice of the science of medicine.
Individual and group coaching with me can help you raise your capacity, skill, sustainability and wellbeing.
My Mission
As the Founder and Managing Director of Coaching for Doctors my mission is to help doctors be well so that they can provide optimal care to patients. Doctor wellbeing is the vital ingredient in this mission. Doctors who are well deliver a more effective and much more sustainable healthcare system. As a result their life and work can more often be described as fulfilling.
Coaching for Doctors seeks to provide high quality, easily accessed coaching to doctors and senior healthcare leaders.
In 2011 I thought I would become a patient advocate after lots of unsatisfactory healthcare experiences in my own family and listening to my counselling clients' stories of healthcare. Stories of disappointment, confusion and frustration. The number of patients who needed an advocate was endless and the processes were difficult. Partly because doctors saw themselves as patient advocates, but neither party was really satisfied that the process was working as they had hoped. I started asking lots of questions of doctors about their experience of work and training in medicine. I was shocked and saddened by what I learnt. I wondered if working with doctors might be more effective than working with one patient after another. The doctors and I shared a common goal, that the patients receive optimal, safe care.
After listening to doctor stories for a couple of years I decided to turn my skills in psychology - therapy and group facilitation, coaching with corporate clients and teaching meditation - towards supporting doctors. In 2014 I began offering coaching to doctors as a way to effect change for individuals, and systemically. Very few doctors had heard of coaching at that time, hundreds have welcomed it and endorsed what I have offered as their coach since.
In 2020 I wrote a white paper about how coaching doctors can help healthcare provide a safer, more sustainable, effective service to patients, by helping doctors to be well, to feel valued and appreciated. And in 2021 I published what is now an international best selling book, The Thriving Doctor - How to be more balanced and fulfilled, working in medicine.
I look forward to meeting you and learning about your missions in healthcare and life if you are:.
