Compassionate care is what patients look for. Studies show that when the patient perceives the doctor as compassionate they have better health outcomes.

Doctors believe they are compassionate but others don't always rate them so highly. It's not something you automatically cultivate in the cut and thrust of a medical career so how do you know if you are compassionate?

There is too much suffering in the lives of doctors. Almost every day another doctor tells me how much they are suffering.

  • So how can you maintain your compassion when there is so much pressure and there are so many things you can't fix?
  • Many doctors tell me they are compassionate at work but don't have much left for their loved ones at home after work.
  • Some doctors say I'm a doctor, how can I not be compassionate? with feelings of shame written all over their face, as they desperately try to keep up.
  • At work in medicine, you expect to meet human suffering, but COVID has amplified suffering all around you and your work, including inside you too.

Fatigue, burnout, stress, overwhelm, anxiety, loss of confidence, lack of work-life balance, emotional burden are all big complex problems but the phrase compassion fatigue is really a misnomer.

Compassion is designed to relieve suffering, yours and your patients. When you know how to use empathy and compassion skillfully it is restorative.
