Caste by Isabel Wilkerson is such an important book for me. My historical knowledge is not good and this is part of my awakening. This book taught me about the slave history of America and how it continues to play out for people of color there today. Wilkerson explains “Casteism is the investment in keeping the hierarchy as it is in order to maintain your own ranking, advantage, privilege, or to elevate yourself above others or keep others beneath you.”
There are many shocking moments in this vital book. However, Wilkerson does not alienate the reader as she demonstrates the thread of inequity that has existed for centuries and calls for a human higher order, where we can all look upon each other with wonder and freedom. I hope you will join me in the quest, begin with this book.
Still Life by Sarah Winman is a gorgeous, character driven story of friends who create their own version of family after the second world war. I was enthralled by this bunch, how their lives intersected and how they loved each other. Oh and it’s mostly set in Florence, what’s not to love!
A terrific read.
Just One Heart: A Cardiologist’s Guide to Healing, Health and Happiness by Jonathan Fisher, MD. The resonance of this book lives in the fact that Jonathan is a cardiologist and a meditation teacher. He share’s his very personal journey from anxious and depressed, burned out doctor who had lost his beloved sister Andrea to cancer, to the leader he is today, of heart felt medicine. In this book you will find a deep well of tools and recommendations for living a healthier life. Most of them encourage you to do the inner life work and build your human connections. For Australian and New Zealand readers your best option at present is to read on Kindle while we wait for the paperback to be available here.
