April Reads 2024

The Weather Woman by Sally Gardner is the best novel I have read this year. Set in 18th century London it has strong characters, original strong plot and moves at a pace that maintains intrigue. The writing is rich, the storytelling magical.

I did not want it to end.

Kirsty Manning’s book The Hidden Book had the unlucky position of living in the shadow of The Weather Woman. However, I have thought about it often afterwards. A holocaust story, and a modern day Australian story, it had us in full flight at book club as it provoked a great discussion about intergenerational trauma.

Tribal Leadership by Logan, King and Fischer-Wright is a re-read. If you have not read this book I encourage you to. It will give you a framework to help think about all the people you work with and what you expect of each other, which is probably unrealistic.  We do a lot of work in our Recalibrate Community about self and role, books like this one help us think and learn enormously.

Fully Connected by Julia Hobsbawm is a fascinating read. Published in 2017 I wished I could read a post pandemic version. Her discussion of social health, social network and the 6 degrees of overload had me captivated. I’m still thinking about the complexity and the simplicity of humans in community, connection, networks and health.

Daniel Siegel’s most recent book Intraconnected is heavy going, a dense and deep study of self. Really the title says it all, only for those who are ready for deep contemplation of their inner being and our interdependence.
