April Reads
May 03, 2022Continuing to work with Brené Brown’s Atlas of the Heart. This amazing book on emotions will be in the mix ongoing. I wholeheartedly recommend you dig deeper into it over and over again.
The Humans by Matt Haig has had a huge impact on me. While it is a novel, Haig’s lived experience of mental illness and his beautiful writing provoked a wild array of thinking in me as a psychologist and fellow human. Questions about what we assumed to be true and the best way to behave.Questions about how humans connect and what we value. I am a Matt Haig fan and have relished all of his books, he doesn't disappoint.
A Fraction Stronger by Mark Berridge. Mark’s lived experience of spinal injury through an accident is a powerful story of the human spirit, personal agency, and
determination. And a compassionate reflection on human connection, including between patients and healthcare workers. I felt honored to be reading Mark’s story.
So many of his reflections resonated with me from our family’s time in the health system on a cancer journey.
The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri. After four doctors recommended this book to me and reading another of Lefteri’s books for bookclub, I heard the universe's message loud and clear!! I loved this book, Lefteri is a master storyteller shining a light on the tragic global issue of refugees.
Humans cannot help connect. The dual survival imperatives of compassionate connection and fear of outsiders are held equally in her book.
A clear theme in April’s reading - the emotional connection between humans makes life worth living. We are not each an island…. Happy reading and may you be well XS
